Looking for the perfect combination of relaxation and luxury?
From the moment we arrived at Granny Mouse Country House and Spa we felt a wave of relaxation set in. Staying at Granny Mouse was like a second home but with all the luxuries (and the beautiful scenery of course). The country house has a heritage of over 30 years and after our visit, it’s clear why it remains such a popular landmark for visitors along the Midlands Meander.
Granny Mouse Country House and Spa is nestled in the scenic Caversham Valley, Balgowan in the KZN Midlands, South Africa. The charming country house offers 32 rooms, two award wining restaurants, a wedding chapel, relaxing spa and a fully equipped conference centre.
Staying at Granny Mouse Country House
Granny Mouse Country House offers a choice of staying in the Deluxe room, Deluxe suite or a Garden room. The rooms are modern, with a warm, country feel. Each room offers a fireplace, air conditioning, flat screen TV, mini bar, WIFI and a your own private balcony or deck.
The Deluxe Suite
We stayed in a Deluxe suite which was elegantly decorated and spacious with a balcony overlooking the Lions river and tranquil gardens. At night the fireplace added a warm atmosphere to our room and we had plenty of firewood to keep the fire going through the night.
When we woke up in the morning we were greeted with the sound of the rapids down the river and doves cooing on our balcony. The room had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable and memorable.

Bathroom with a view
Soaking in the bath tub after a hard week of work was the perfect start to unwind for the weekend. There is no better feeling than putting on your Granny Mouse Country House bath robes and slippers after a pamper bath. The bathroom has heated towel rails and all the extras like bath salts, shampoo, shower caps and soap. There is also a spacious shower and double basin.
It’s the little things
We love the little things. After Lisa and I arrived back from dinner the room fire was lit, the bath towels were being warmed up and we had a note on the bed with the following day’s weather forecast and two bedtime treats. We truly felt pampered.
The bar fridge was stocked with a few refreshments and snacks which is replaced complementary by room service each day. Tea, coffee and milk was also provided.
Granny Mouse Restaurants and Bars
Fine Dinning at The Eves
Now I have to be honest this was a first time I have tried fine dining, Lisa had fine dined a few times before but I had no idea what to expect. I envisioned tiny bite size portions that I had seen served on cooking channels.
The atmosphere was romantic and it was a very intimate dining experience. There was a choice of a 6 course meal each paired with or without a different wine, or you can choose three individual courses from the fine dining A-la-cart menu.
We went for the A-la-cart menu and we weren’t disappointed. Each flower had been strategically placed, every ingredient had been specially chosen and the complimented each other well. The portions were just right with a variety of delectable flavours.
The Bistro Restaurant
The Bistro Restaurant serves a delicious breakfast every morning . There was a buffet spread of fruit, yogurt’s, breads, cheese, biscuits and fresh juices. On top of that you get a menu where you can choose your eggs Benedict, omelettes and English style breakfasts, again we were not disappointed. The cheese spread and egg Benedict was our favourite.

Lunch or Dinner… maybe something sweet?
The Bistro restaurant is also open for lunch and dinner offering a wide selection to choose from. The portions were generous and the preparation was nothing but appealing. The same menu can also be enjoyed on the pool deck and available to in house guests from room service.
Behind the wooden cellar door and down the staircase you will find the Wine cellar which is really one of a kind. This specially designed cellar, was dug deep below the hotel over 20 years ago to ensure perfect temperatures were achieved to store the wine. The cellar offers a wide variety of vintage wines to French Champagnes and everything in between. There are over 4000 South African and International Wines stored here.
The Cellar was fitted with an intimate and unique dining experience. If you celebrating a special occasion you can book the 8 seater table and order from either The Eaves or The Bistro menu.
The hotel also offers Brandy and Chocolate tasting, cheese and wine tasting and even different wines paired with macaroons. Booking is essential.
Bar and Cigar lounge
The bar area is cosy and has a real county pub charm to it. In Winter log fires are lit to keep warm with a pleasant atmosphere. Opposite the main bar there is also an option of a cigar lounge and whiskey bar which opens up to the pool area. We spent some time in the main bar after a morning exploring the Midlands Meander. It was good to catch up on some chatter, look through photos and watch the rugby with an ice cold beer.
Relax with a cup of tea or a good book in one of the lounge areas
The friendly and professional staff at the Spa are welcoming and ready to pamper. There are various treatments available to spoil yourself from a hydro bath, massages, manicures, pedicures to facials. There are also different skin treatments and packages available that will restore and your skin and leave you feeling even more relaxed after a getaway with the beautiful country surroundings.

Tranquil Gardens Setting
It is the end of summer and the gardens were in full bloom. The beautiful garden is home to an abundance of birds, creatures and critters. As we walked through the gardens we admired the colours and breathed in the sweet variety of fragrances from the different flowers. There are fountains with the sound of trickling water that followed us down the garden path. We loved the enchanted signs that can be spotted around the garden welcoming, bees, fairy’s and butterflies to come out and play.
Walking along the garden path to our room we were lucky enough to spot a small bush buck doe roaming around grazing on the grass.
The monkey’s came and sat on the balcony one morning, watching us through the window. I have to admit they are really cute and entertaining to watch but very inquisitive and cleaver (just remember to keep windows and doors closed).
Butterflies and birds were out and about the whole time enjoying the warm weather and scented flowers. There is a nature walk on the property walking along the river where you can also come across different wildlife.
