Looking for unique & beautiful India accommodations?
We have put together a list of 11 India accommodations that stood out for us and that we would recommend if you are planning a trip around the colourful and diverse country. After spending more than seven weeks trailing through India, we started at the beaches in the South and slowly headed to the deserts and Himalayas in the North.
It turned out to be an adventure we will never forget. India holds so many memories for us now (both good and not so good) and we were lucky enough to experience some phenomenal things. We were stranded in the Kerala Floods, slept in the desert under the stars on a camel safari, got the selfie in front of the famous Taj Mahal, watched the sunset along the Ghats of Varanasi, spent a night on a houseboat along the Kerala backwaters and even visited the Dhali Lama’s temple just to mention a few.
In this list, you will find some of our favourite places to stay in India that we would recommend after our 7-week adventure. India is a huge country but in this list, we included places in Kerala, Rajasthan, Varanasi and Delhi.
Here is a breakdown of some of our favourite places to stay that we discovered during our 3rd trip to India:
1. Palan Beach resort (Kerala)
“Perfect location along Varkala Cliff”
Palan Beach Retort is a small hotel along the Varkala Cliff. The hotel offers 7 rooms all with private balconies and ocean views. As we walked out of the hotel we couldn’t help notice the ocean which is just a few meters away with a gorgeous view. The location is ideal as we were on the main cliff pathway. Along the path, there are a variety of restaurants and shops selling art, jewellery, clothing and souvenirs. Just below the cliff is the beach and a temple to explore.
The rooms are bright, airy, spacious, tastefully designed and modern. The bathrooms have a shower with hot water and complimentary toiletries. All rooms are air-conditioned, have a fridge, kettle, tea and coffee confectioneries.
Just a few meters from the hotel along the road is a tuk-tuk stand where it is easy to catch a ride into town. We also recommend checking out The Darjeeling cafe next door… they make the best Paneer Butter Masala that we had anywhere in India.
What made our stay exceed our expectations were the staff, they were friendly and always willing to help with travel plans, car hire or laundry.
What we loved most about Palan Beach resort?
The location, staff is always willing to assist and the fantastic views!
Anyone that wants the views along Varkala cliff, Couples, friends travelling together and even solo travellers.

2. Palm Grove Lake Resort (Kerala)
“Lazy backwater vibes”
Palm Grove is a hidden gem set in a natural surrounding of greenery and beautiful gardens. It is right on the banks of the beautiful Punnamada Lake which is located near the mesmerising backwaters of Alappuzha. The family-owned estate is homely, welcoming and the owner Mr Philip is really a wonderful guy. The resort has a private entrance creating a peaceful atmosphere free from noise and hustle. The resort is in close proximity to the town, beaches and local attractions.
There is nothing more beautiful than waking up and heading down to the open dining hall. We loved admiring the views of the beautiful gardens and backwaters with boats floating by while enjoying breakfast. Staying on a houseboat is a must while in Kerala!
The estate offers Superior luxury rooms, Deluxe Villas and Garden Villas. The variety of rooms suit different types of travellers, whether you looking for a luxury stay or a family vacation. All rooms have an air conditioner and modern amenities including T.V, Wi-fi and transport to and from the resort can be arranged. With a swing, hammock and benches in the garden, you are forced to relax and soak up the peaceful atmosphere. (We sure did!)
The resort offers it’s own unique backwater experience, the love nest is a residential banana shaped boat fitting 4-6 people, it is hand-paddled and the guide has excellent knowledge of the area. Discovering the Alleppey backwaters on this unique little hand paddled boat was one of our Alleppey highlights! You can get a local perspective cruising through the backwater canals where the larger boats cannot go, at a very relaxed pace. Besides getting up close to the local village life we got a tour of the rice paddy’s and learnt a bit about the area. The price of the boat is charged per hour, included are coffee and biscuits and you have a choice to go in the morning or afternoon. The photo opportunities are fantastic!
What we loved most about Palm Grove Lake Resort?
Mr Phillips wonderful hospitality, location next to the backwaters, love boat and of course the relaxing atmosphere of the gardens.

The villas are set among beautiful lush gardens with an abundance of butterflies and exotic flowers which ends onto a white stretch of a beautiful beach.
The villas are exquisitely furnished and we had our own private pool and outside garden. The rooms are nothing but luxury with lavish bathrooms, walk-in dressers, toiletries and everything you need that will make you feel right at home. There is also a full-size Olympic pool if you would like to swim a few laps or just relax in the loungers with a good book. 4. Ginger Museum Hotel (Kerala)
“The ever-changing hotel”
The Ginger house museum hotel was certainly one of the most unique hotels that we have stayed in. The hotel is known for its old world charm & world class service.
One of the things among many others that makes this hotel so unique is that the antique furniture that make up the rooms, reception, hallways, restaurant and lobby. Everything in the hotel is for sale, so the room’s furnishings keep rotating.
The Ginger House Museum Hotel has 9 rooms, the king’s chamber, Lotus sea view, Moon and honey sea view, Crown of queen deluxe, Art deco deluxe, Chettinad mansion deluxe, Rhythm of Malabar deluxe and Travancore palace. Each room is inspired by India’s early history and they are each richly decorated to the theme. The hotel provides nothing but luxury and comfort even down to the last detail. All rooms come with a private bathroom and for your comfort, there are bathrobes, slippers and toiletries. The award-winning in house restaurant serves outstanding South Indian cuisine. Every morning we enjoyed a generous & delicious breakfast out on the terrace watching the boats along the water of the Vembanad Lake. If you enjoy ginger, the restaurant won’t disappoint, they offer an interesting collection of ginger dishes & refreshments, from prawns and chicken to tea and lime soda. Make sure you don’t miss the ginger ice cream… it was a real win for the 2 of us!
The Ginger house is a well-known landmark around the world selling antiques, unique pieces, arts and crafts. The owners are avid collectors and a popular agent with antique hunters around the world.
The owners and staff of this luxurious wonder are the most down to earth people. Staying at Ginger house should be on everyone’s bucket list.

The staff were wonderful, they welcomed us with welcome drinks and a Khata (which is a Nepali tradition where a scarf is offered with greetings and well wishes) They were very friendly and helpful with advice and answered all the questions we had.
The Haveli Hotel has 14 individually decorated spacious rooms all with memory foam beds. Each room has wifi, mini bar, air con, fan and a coffee/tea maker. Daily housekeeping is available on request. The bathrooms are spacious with hot water, towels and toiletries are provided.
There is a small vegetarian restaurant on the premises. They serve a delicious buffet breakfast every morning with a wide range of both Indian and western options.
