The Meeting Place In Stone Town

Zanzibar is situated in the main island in the Tanzanian archipelago. Stone Town, part of Zanzibar City, is an old trade center with mosques and a maze of winding lanes. Somewhere in between the zigzagged streets there is a courtyard. The square area, known as Jaws Corner which has become a popular meeting place for locals and tourist alike.

People gather at Jaws Corner throughout the day to socialize, share stories and play games.  Others come to the courtyard simply to unwind and people watch while they enjoy their cuppa.  This is one of the few places in Stone town where you can take a break from the hustle and bustle of the busy  streets.  I can only describe it as the center of a hurricane. The streets of Stone Town are lined with market stalls all trading their goods.  People and tourists are out and about doing their daily business.

The coffee at Jaws Corner is an Arabic-style local coffee; it’s strong, unsweetened and poured from a metal kettle which is heated over a side walk charcoal stove. If you prefer you coffee sweet, there is a local substitute by nibbling on sweet peanut brittle in between the sips of coffee instead of using sugar.

The coffee is sipped from small communal cups. If you in a rush no problem you can hop off your bicycle or motor bike and down a quick cup then be back on your way again.

Now the story behind the name Jaws corner apparently came about the same time as the Shark movie “Jaws’ came out. It is said that the movie was played off a small T.V set outside and so the name stuck to the popular meeting spot since.

There is a very interesting landmark in the center of the square with a pole wrapped in flags. On the pole is phone with a sign that says “free international calls”. It is said that if you can reach the phone you can make a call back home. This is purely entertainment for the locals as tourists have actually tried to climb to pole to reach the phone.
